Reflective Journal (9th of June 2021)

 

On the 9^th of June, I visited class 3 at Sunrise Primary School to do my observation. I could notice from the first time I arrived that they are very organized and their teacher is well-prepared and looking so professional as well. He portrayed the ethics and values throughout his teaching, in which he came early before her delivering, prepare well his lesson and amazing teaching aids, show love and care to his students and when struggling learners need help he approached each one and assist him and her accordingly.

During his teaching, I could tell that he so fully committed to his career as a teacher where he values his students’ different learning needs and catered it all for them accordingly. Additionally, students are also showing respect to their teacher by which they did their tasks assigned by their teacher and usually followed instructions instructed by the teacher. Therefore, there was also a time he stayed in the afternoon and prepared all his lesson plans and teaching aids before the next day. He displayed one of the ethical behaviors in which he always prepared the best lesson for students and sacrifice his free time to plan and prepare the lesson before the next day.

However, some students were not participating well in class and wanting to tease their peers. The lesson went well by the teacher, but some students did not cooperate well in doing their work. They just wanted to disturb others and want to go to the toilet.

As a teacher trainee, I recommend that the associate teacher must be flexible in his teaching approaches. This was where he taught and controlled their misbehavior at the same time, and it was done by designing the time-out corner for the misbehaved students and the best one was to conduct the counselling with them and their parents in order to minimize or eliminate their misbehaviors and boost their learning experiences and academic performances.

 

Redo Task 2 Journal (this is the correct one)

 It was the 24th of March 2021 where I did my observation at Sunrise Primary School, in class one Rose. When I first entered this class, and it was well organized by which students sit down and sing a song with their teacher. They all followed what their teacher asked them to do. The classroom was decorated with students individual and group activities. The time out corner is very special because it is designed in a way that students would have a chance to do some work even when they were punished. (see appendix 1).  The teacher was flexible in her teaching as she taught students and controlled some misbehaviour attitudes arose from them. She usually used calm and friendly tone of voice to control her students.( see appendix 2)

According to  (Editor, 2020), he mentioned that student learn more through social interaction like pair work and group work. I noticed this theory's theorist named Vygotsky throughout her teaching as she allowed her children to work with their mates. Therefore, the teaching went well from beginning till the end as students collaborate well and enjoyed each lesson delivered to them. (see appendix 3) It also went well in a way that teacher approached and facilitated each student if they need more assistance. One thing I saw was that she called out and did the counselling with one of her students who was not attending school about 2 weeks. She encouraged and asked her student to prioritize her education beside household matters, as education is beneficial for all students. In addition, when their given tasks finished before the allocated time, then she played educational videos for them to watch and keep busy to avoid the disturbances. (see appendix 4)

Additionally, I believed that every child achieved every learning outcome from each subject being taught and she finished her delivering on time within the allocated 1-hour time. I noticed this as I helped in marking their activity and most of them do well. The classroom was really organized, and all students collaborated well in working together, they had no free time for disturbances as they are always on task from the beginning till the end of every lessons.

To recommend, it is important for teachers to keep their classroom organized well in terms of student-centered learning environment. As this is one way of improving struggling learner to become a self-directed learner. Students centered learning competency is applied by this associate teacher as her students actively participate in every lesson and group working. I could not intervene to make improvement in her teaching as she did very well, I just wish she keep this up and applied many more teaching approaches next time. Overall, I have learnt lot of teaching strategies and approaches from this associate teacher, and I would apply it in my future teaching.
